For a little less then a year now, making t-shirts has been my newest hobby. It is a lot of fun to be able to make custom designs and personalized shirts. If you have been with us since the beginning, I made the t-shirts we wore on our launch day. If you haven’t been with us since the beginning, don’t worry, you can check out the picture of us on our mrsmomlife Facebook page. I recently made us new ones, so you will have to be on the look out for a picture of us in those.
This newest hobby started with me wanting to make some personalized cups for my boys basketball team. After I did that, I tried more cups for other things. I use my Cricut to cut out words and designs that I have made. Here are some cups I made in the beginning:
Then one day Janelle asked if I was able to make t-shirts. I’m always up for a challenge so I was willing to give it a shot. The process for making the t-shirts and cups are very similar. Except with the cups you use regular vinyl, I like Oracle 651 vinyl. And with the t-shirts, you have to use heat transfer vinyl, I prefer Siser HTV. The first t-shirts I attempted were basketball spirit shirts. Since those turned out pretty good I have made shirts for a lot of other occasion. At first I hand ironed the vinyl on to the shirts. Over time many of those shirts have started to peel. Now I have a t-shirt press that I use and now have very t-shirts that start to peel.
After a lot of trial and error I have learned a lot of ways to make the t-shirts better. Layering is definitely a little difficult but gets easier with practice. The vinyl shrinks a small amount with heat. So with layering, you have to be careful how long it is heated before adding more layers. I would not recommend this hobby for someone that is looking for just a couple personalized shirts. It is a commitment, but a lot of fun. I have made shirts for Disney trips, birthdays, just for fun, and many more occasions.
Here are some shirts I have made:
