Have you ever thought about winning the lottery? Of course you have, we all have, right?! I was riding in my mom’s car this weekend and she had a lottery ticket tucked in the visor because she needed to go see if she was a WINNER WINNER (she still hasn’t checked the ticket). Seeing it made me start to dream about what I would do if I won the lottery.
The first thing I’d do is pay off our cars! Other than our house, our cars are the only other debt we have. I know we are blessed to not have a lot of debt, and if I won the lottery I would ensure that we were debt free.
I’ve worked in a lot of Lutheran ministries and some are near and dear to my heart. I grew up going to Camp Luther in Nebraska. Some of my favorite summer memories are from my camp days. Some of my favorite people I met a looooong time ago at camp. I would give money to Camp Luther in Nebraska and Lutheran Valley Retreat (LVR) in Colorado. When I began teaching in Colorado I also began taking students to LVR for Outdoor Ed. LVR reminded me of Camp Luther in many ways. Some of my favorite times with my students are memories of hiking Cedar Mountain or singing around the campfire at LVR.
I would put the majority of my winnings into college savings accounts for my children. I took out student loans to complete both my undergrad and graduate work. In my opinion there is nothing wrong with having to take out student loans, but if I could give the gift of not having to take out loans to my children, I would.
I would also plan for the Hubster and I to retire quite nicely and put money away for such retirement.
This would probably be the hardest part of winning the lottery–deciding how to spend it on the fun stuff! First, I’d plan a trip for the Hubster and I to go on–I’m thinking European cruise with lots of stops in various countries. Next, I’d plan a big trip to Disney and invite all of my family to join us at the happiest place on Earth. Then, I’d plan another trip for just the boys, hubster and I. Finally, I’d buy some of the things I always talk myself out of buying because I don’t need it or that I think, I’ll wait for it to go on sale, then I’ll buy it.
So, what would you do if you won the lottery?
